Art of Science: Science Presented in an Art Gallery
Public Event · By Layne Jackson and Yoav Kashiv
Thursday, Dec 13th, 7-10 pm
This month: Zombies & Cell Biology!
After a long hiatus the series is back!
In this monthly series, scientists present different scientific topics to the general public in a laid back fashion.
You definitely don’t want to miss this month’s presentation:
Zombies & Cell Biology
(When science and fiction meet)
Cells are the basic building blocks of all organisms, including humans. But what do cells look like? What’s in a cell? And how could these cells be co-opted and turn us into flesh eating zombies?
Learn about cells through the images of electron microscopy and the hypothetical cellular horror of a zombie outbreak.
Lecture and discussion moderated by Dr. Joe Austin, director of electron microscopy, University of Chicago.
The presentations are given in Layne Jackson’s Art Shop (http://laynejackson.com/).
The gallery is next to the Division blue line stop, and also accessible by the Ashland (#9) and Division (#70) buses. Some street parking is available.
Delicious food from the vegan food truck will be available to buy, as well as cheap cash bar.
The presentation will be 8-9 pm.
We hope you will join us!
Please post the event on your wall and invite others.

NEW! Fearless Drawing! (Foundation Class)
Drawing is fun! Anyone can learn to draw-or improve the drawing skills they already possess. In this class, we’ll use simple tools and basic techniques to creating drawings with power and personality. Beginning by drawing familiar objects, we’ll study approaches to line, form, light and shade, gesture and composition. We’ll progress to portraiture and finally to drawing the figure with a live model. If you’ve always wanted to learn to draw-or to draw better-but been afraid to try-this is the class for you!NOV-DEC
Painting Class: Objects + Form + Face (Foundation Class)
Work with experienced art instructor Layne Jackson, www.laynejackson.com to develop your understanding of painting materials, and the techniques needed to express yourself in paint.
We will cover painting skills, color mixing and theory, palette, brush and materials handling, and the concepts of light, composition, scale, and texture. Study form by painting from a variety of sources, so come with your imagination and the desire to create one painting each 1-2 class sessions. Push yourself to find your strengths in the alla prima painting technique of gently but firmly getting a likeness. This is a great foundation level class if you haven’t painted in a while, or EVER!
Materials provided for first class. Supply list available upon registration

Painting Class: Painting- Focus on Face and Figure
Work with experienced art instructor Layne Jackson, BFA, to develop your understanding of the face and the hands, and the materials needed to express yourself in paint. Address the concepts of light, composition, scale, and color as you create paintings based on what you see, from photographic references to working with your own images and likeness.
We will focus on both the alla prima method (applying paint directly) and the old masters technique of creating an underpainting and glazing. Learn to paint what you see and trust your own creative interpretations. This is a popular class, register early!
